MIDDLESWARTH, Ner, a Representative from Juniata, Mifflin and Union Counties; born, December 12, 1783 in New Jersey; served, 1st brigade, 9th Division, Volunteer Corps (1812, War of 1812); captain, Union Rifle Volunteers of Union County, Pennsylvania Militia (1814, War of 1812); owner and operator, grist, saw, and paper mills; owner and operator, distillery; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1815-1816 and 1816-1817 terms; reelected to the 1818-1819, 1819-1820, 1821-1822, 1824-1825, 1825-1826, 1827-1828, 1828-1829; reelected as an Anti-Masonic for the 1829-1830, 1830-1831, 1834-1835 and 1835-1836 terms; reelected to the House as a Whig for the 1841 term; elected, Speaker (1827-1829, 1835-1836); elected, delegate, Democratic State Convention (1832); unsuccessful campaign, Governor of Pennsylvania (1844); elected, president, State Whig Convention (1847); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1848); unsuccessful campaign, State Canal Commissioner (1848); elected, United States Congress (1853-1855); associate judge, Snyder County (1858-1862); stockholder and president, Snyder County Beaver Furnace Company; died, June 2, 1865 in Beavertown, Snyder County, Pennsylvania; interred, Beavertown Cemetery, Beavertown, Snyder County, Pennsylvania.
