STURGEON, Dr. Daniel, a Representative from Fayette County; born, October 27, 1789 in Mount Pleasant, Adams County, Pa.; graduated, Jefferson College (now Washington and Jefferson College), 1807; M.D., Jefferson Medical School (now Thomas Jefferson University); physician; appointed, coroner, Fayette County; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1818-1819, 1819-1820, 1820-1821 and 1821-1822 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1822-1823 term; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1826-1830); elected, Senate president (1828-1830); gubernatorial appointee, Pennsylvania Auditor General (1830-1836); elected, Pennsylvania Treasurer (1838-1839); elected, United States Senate (1840-1851); presidential appointee, Treasurer of the United States Mint (1853-1858); director, Fayette County Bank (1858); engaged in banking; died, July 2, 1878 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; interred, Oak Grove Cemetery, South Union Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
