DUANE, William J., a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, May 9, 1780 in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland; lawyer; elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican for the 1809-1810, 1812-1813 and 1813-1814 terms; reelected to the House as an Old School candidate for the 1819-1820 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1810, 1814, 1817); unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1816, 1822, 1824); unsuccessful campaign, common council, Philadelphia (1819, 1820, 1821); United States Secretary of Treasury (1833); died, September 27, 1865 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
