SMITH, Joseph B., a Representative from Philadelphia City; clothing merchant; unsuccessful campaign, commissioner, Northern Liberties Township (1819); elected, commissioner, Northern Liberties Township (1822); unsuccessful campaign, elections inspector (1827); elected, common council, Philadelphia (1832); elected as a National Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1834-1835 term; reelected to the House as a Whig for the 1835-1836 and 1836-1837 terms; appointed, prison inspector, Philadelphia (1838, 1848); elected, board president, Guardians of the Poor, Philadelphia (1837-1840, 1855).
