IRVIN, Alexander, a Representative from Centre and Clearfield Counties; born, January 18, 1800 in Huntingdon County (now Centre County), Pa.; lumber and dry goods merchant; tavern owner (1829); owner, grist mill (1830); surveyor (1834); elected, treasurer, Clearfield County (1828-1830); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1833-1834 and 1834-1835 terms; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1835-1838); elected, overseer of the poor, Clearfield County (1841); elected, prothonotary, Clearfield County (1842); appointed, clerk of courts, recorder of deeds and register of wills, Clearfield County (1842-1846); elected, United States Congress (1847-1849); Presidential appointee, United States Marshal for the western district of Pennsylvania (1850); elected, auditor, Clearfield County (1857); died, March 20, 1874 in Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania; interred, Old Clearfield Cemetery, Clearfield, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
