WURTS, John, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, August 12, 1792 in Flanders, Morris County, NJ; graduated, Princeton College (1813); lawyer (1816-1861); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1818); elected as a Binnite to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1820-1821 term; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1821-1822); elected, common council, Philadelphia County (1823); elected, United States Congress (1825-1827); prosecuting attorney, Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia (1827-1831); president, Delaware and Hudson Canal Company (1831-1858); director, Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, Philadelphia (1828-1830); died, April 23, 1861 in Rome, Italy; interred, Basto-Pleasant Mills Cemetery, Pleasant Mills, Atlantic County, New Jersey.
