Ayres (Ayers), William, a Representative from Dauphin County; born, December 14, 1788 in Middle Paxtang Township, Lancaster County (now Dauphin County), Pa.; major, 16th Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia (1824); appointed, justice of the peace (1819-1829); lawyer (1826-1856); elected, delegate, National Anti-Masonic Convention (1832); elected as an Anti-Mason to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1833-1834 and 1834-1835 terms; elected, commissioner, Dauphin County (1837); elected, director, United States Bank at Philadelphia (1841); president, Harrisburg Gas Company (1850); president, Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad Company (1853); president, Harrisburg and Hamburg Railroad Company (1854-1856); died, May 26, 1856 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
