MATTHEWS, John, a Representative from Cambria and Somerset Counties; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1826-1827, 1827-1828 and 1829-1830 terms; toll collector, Pennsylvania Canal, Johnstown (1830-1836); elected, delegate, Democratic National Convention (1835, 1844); commissioner, Pennsylvania Railroad Company (1846); farmer; died, July of 1862 in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa.
