SMITH, Robert, a Representative from Franklin County; born, 1766 in Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pa.; elected, auditor, Franklin County (1805-1807); elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1807-1808 and 1808-1809 terms; reelected to the House as a Republican for the 1811-1812, 1812-1813, 1813-1814 and 1815-1816 terms; elected, Speaker (1813-1814; resigned, February 14, 1814); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1819-1823); reelected to the House as a Democrat for the 1823-1824 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the Senate (1824); associate judge, Franklin County (1836-1843); died, April 21, 1849 in Peters Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Church Hill Graveyard, Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
