SMITH, Frederick, a Representative from Franklin County; born, February 6, 1796 in Colerain Township, Bedford County, Pa.; attended, Washington College (Chestertown, Md.); lawyer (1818-1861); appointed, District Attorney, Franklin County (1824-1828); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1823-1824 term; reelected to the House for the 1824-1825, 1825-1826, 1826-1827, 1829-1830, 1830-1831 and 1838-1839 terms; elected, Speaker, 1829-1831; elected, school director, Chambersburg (1834); treasurer, Pennsylvania College (now, Gettysburg College) (1844-1856); proprietor, Valley Sentinel (1850-1852); died, May 3, 1861 in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
