ALTER, Jacob, Jr., a Representative from Cumberland County; born, January 1, 1773 in Cumberland County, Pa.; miller, farmer, distiller; elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1809-1810 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1810, 1816); reelected to the House as a Republican for the 1811-1812, 1812-1813, 1814-1815 and 1815-1816 terms; unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1813); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1817-1821); trustee, Dickinson College (1820-1833); unsuccessful campaign, coroner, Cumberland County (1822); reelected to the House as a Democrat for the 1825-1826, 1826-1827 and 1827-1828 terms; died, June 29, 1839 in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; interred, Plainfield Church of God Cemetery, Plainfield, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
