GORGAS, William Rittenhouse, a Representative from Cumberland County; born, May 8, 1806 in White Hill, Cumberland County, Pa.; attended, Mount Saint Mary’s College, Md.; farmer; engaged, ore mining; merchant; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1836-1837, 1837-1838 and 1838-1839 terms; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1842-1844); engaged, banking; director, First National Bank of Mechanicsburg; director, Harrisburg National Bank; director, Harrisburg Bridge Company; director, Harrisburg Market Company; president, Harrisburg Burial Case Company; president, Allen and East Pennsboro Fire Insurance Company; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1878); died, December 7, 1892 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Camp Hill Cemetery, Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
