FRANKLIN, William, a Clerk from Philadelphia County; born, February 22, 1730 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; captain, Pennsylvania Provincial Troops (1746-1747, King George’s War); lawyer; Controller of the General Post Office; appointed, Chief Clerk, Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly (May 13, 1751-October 13, 1751); elected, Chief Clerk, Pennsylvania Colonial Assembly (October 14, 1751-February 17, 1757, resigned); land investor; personal assistant to Benjamin Franklin (1757-1763); appointed, Royal Governor of New Jersey (1763-1776); died, November 13, 1813 in London, England; interred, St. Pancras Old Church, London, England.
