AVERY, Dr. Otis, a Representative from Wayne County; born, August 19, 1808 in Bridgewater, Oneida County, NY; apprentice, silversmith and watchmaker; proprietor, watch repair business; dentist (1833-1904); dental tool and appliance inventor; United States Patent holder, improvements on a sewing machine (1852, 1854, 1858); elected as a Whig American to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1855 term, not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1856 term; United States Patent holder, Self-Indicating Scale or Balance (1857); appointed, associate judge, Wayne and Pike Counties Judicial District (1871-1892); died, February 22, 1904 in Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania; interred, Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp, Richmond County, New York.
