McGOWAN, Edward, “Ned,” a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, March 12, 1813 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Couty, Pa.; printer; lawyer; clerk to the commissioners, Moyamensing, Philadelphia County (1839-1842); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1843 term; superintendent of police, Moyamensing (1843-1848); judge, Court of Quarter Session, San Francisco County, Ca. (1850-1855); publisher and editor, Phoenix, Sacramento, Ca. (1857-1858); publisher and editor, Ubiquitous, Sacramento, Ca. (1858); assistant sergeant at arms, United States Congress (1859); gold prospector, Arizona and New Mexico Territories; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1869); died, December 8, 1893 in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California; interred, Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma, San Mateo County, California.
