PITTENGER, John C., a Representative from Lancaster County; born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa., May 23, 1930; graduated, Phillips Exeter Academy; attended, London School of Economics; B.A., Harvard College, 1951; LL.B., Harvard Law School, 1958; served, United States Army (1952-1955); attorney; member, Lancaster County Democratic Executive Committee; leader, 9th Ward, Lancaster City Democratic; adjunct lecturer, Franklin and Marshall College; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1965 and 1969 terms; director of research, Democratic Caucus, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1967-1968); appointed, Speaker's Committee on Tax Reform (1970); unsuccessful campaigns for reelection to the House (1966, 1970); legislative secretary to Governor Milton Shapp (1971); appointed, Secretary, Pennsylvania Department of Education (1972-1977); appointed, chair, Joint Legislative Data Processing Committee (1977-1978); Dean, Rutgers School of Law (1981-1986); distinguished professor, Rutgers School of Law (1986-1994); appointed, Pennsylvania State Board of Education (1991-1996); died, December 6, 2009 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
