ROBERTS, Solomon White, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, August 3, 1811 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; assistant civil engineer, Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company (1828-1830); civil engineer, Schuylkill Canal (1830); civil engineer, Portage Railroad (1831-1836); superintendent of iron manufacturing in England, Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (1836-1838); chief engineer, Catawissa Railroad (1838-1841); president and superintendent, Philadelphia, Germantown & Norristown Railway (1842); president, Schuylkill Navigation Company (1843-1845); elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1848 term; chief engineer, Pennsylvania Railroad Company, (1848-1856); chief engineer and general superintendent, North Pennsylvania Railroad (1856-1879); engineer, Commission on Water, Philadelphia (1875); died, March 22, 1882 in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey; interred, Woodlands Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
