SERGEANT, William, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, August 29, 1829 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; graduated, Princeton College (now Princeton University), 1847; served, First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry (1850-1861); captain, Company F, First Battalion, 12th Regiment, United States Army Infantry (1861-1864, Civil War); lieutenant colonel, 210th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865, Civil War); lawyer (1850-1861); elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1853 term; died, April 11, 1865 in while serving in the United States Infantry; interred, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
