DEFORD, John Hopewood, a Representative from Fayette County; born, February 14, 1798 in St. Clairsville, Belmont County, Oh.; attended, Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College); lawyer (1835-1856); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1842 and 1843 terms; elected, delegate, State Democratic Convention (1843); elected, school director, Uniontown (1841); elected, burgess, Uniontown (1844); died, November 10, 1856 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania; interred, Oak Hill Cemetery (now Historic Presbyterian Public Cemetery), Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
