ELWELL, William, a Representative from Bradford County; born, October 9, 1808 in Milltown, Luzerne County (now Bradford County), Pa.; attended, Athens Academy; engineer assistant on canal lines; teacher (3 years); lawyer (1833-1848, 1850-1862); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1842 and 1843 terms; appointed, judge, 13th Judicial District (1849); member, Democratic State Committee: unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1866); elected, judge, 26th Judicial District (1862-1889); died, October 15, 1895 in Bloomsburg, Columbia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Riverside Cemetery, Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania.
