HAMILTON, John Scott, a Representative from Allegheny County; born, August 23, 1822 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa.; attended, Western University of Pennsylvania (now University of Pittsburgh), 1840; private, “Duquesne Greys,” Company K, 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1846-1848, Mexican-American War); captain, Shield Guards, Allegheny County (1854); lawyer (1844-1856); elected, common council, 5th Ward, Pittsburgh (1845-1846); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1848, 1854); appointed, auditor, Allegheny County (1850-1853); elected, delegate, County Democratic Convention (1853); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1853); elected as a Democrat to the Iowa House of Representatives (1856); died while in office, November 23, 1856 in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa; interred, Fort Madison City Cemetery, Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa.
