SMYSER, Daniel Martin, a Representative from Adams County; born, February 27, 1809 in Straban Township, Adams County, Pa.; graduated, Dickenson College, 1827; studied law under Thaddeus Stevens; attorney (1831-1873); elected, delegate, Whig State Convention (1839); elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1839 and 1840; reelected to the House in 1849; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1841, 1850); elected, school board, Gettysburg; unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1850); elected, judge, Pennsylvania County of Common Pleas, Bucks and Montgomery Counties (1852-1862); unsuccessful campaign, chief justice, Pennsylvania Supreme Court (1854); died, January 11, 1873 in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania; interred, Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
