BACKUS, Seth A., a Representative from Clearfield, Elk and McKean Counties; born, July 14, 1813 in Lee, Berkshire County, Ma.; lumberman; hotel proprietor; coal mine operator; unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1854); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1855 and 1856; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1857); farmer; elected, delegate, County Democratic Convention (1861); died, April 28, 1892 in Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania; interred, Rose Hill Cemetery, Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania.
