GRATZ, Jacob, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, December 20, 1788 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; A.M., University of Pennsylvania, 1811; merchant; manager (1821-1833) and president, (1834-1837), Pennsylvania Union Canal Company; director, Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb (now, Pennsylvania School for the Deaf), Philadelphia; elected as a Whig to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1838-1839 term; reelected to the House for the 1840 and 1841 terms; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1842, Special Election); commissioner, Delaware Canal Company (1843); died, December 24, 1856 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mikveh Israel Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
