SMITH, Edmond Leaf, a Representative from Berks County; born, October 23, 1829 in Berks County, Pennsylvania; graduated, Reading Academy; graduated, Georgetown University, 1853; studied law under Henry W. Smith and Edward P. Pearson; first lieutenant, Company C, 25th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861, Civil War); corporal, Company H, 55th Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia (Civil War, 1863); major, Company G, 19th Infantry, United States Union Army (Civil War, 1863-1867: prisoner of war, Libby Prison, 1863-1864: Prisoner of War Camp, Charleston, SC, 1864); lawyer (1851-1891); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1857 and 1858; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1859); elected, Territorial Legislative Assembly of Colorado (1875-1876); died, September 11, 1891 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania; interred, Saint Peter the Apostle Church Cemetery, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
