CHATHAM, James, a Representative from Clinton and Lycoming Counties; born, April 29, 1814 in Wayne Township, Clinton County, Pa.; shoemaker apprentice (2 years); journeyman (5 years); river pilot, Lock Haven and Marietta line (20 years); elected, sheriff, Clinton County (1849-1850); merchant (1850-1852); lawyer (1856-1881); elected as a Union Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1862 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House for the 1863 term; unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1865); appointed, United States Commissioner, Pennsylvania Western District (1875); died, December 27, 1881 in Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pennsylvania; interred, Highland Cemetery, Lock Haven, Clinton County, Pennsylvania.
