HARGNETT, John, a Representative from Armstrong and Westmoreland Counties; born, April 13, 1811 in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pa.; clerk and dry goods merchant (1830-1875); postmaster, United States Postal Service, Ligonier (1833-1842, 1846-1849, 1853-1860, 1887-1889); elected, delegate, Pennsylvania Democratic Convention (1861); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1863; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1864, 1871, 1874); elected, treasurer, Ligonier; elected, school board secretary, Ligonier (1882); contributor, “Olde Time Recollections,” The Ligonier Echo; died, June 13, 1896 in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; interred, Ligonier Valley Cemetery, Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania
