NEGLEY, John Henry, a Representative from Butler, Lawrence, Mercer Counties; born, February 7, 1823 in Butler, Butler County, Pa; attended, Butler Academy; attended, Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College); studied law under John Bredin; private, Company G, 14th Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia (1862, Civil War); attorney (1845-1908); elected, District Attorney, Butler County (1850-1852); owner and editor, Democratic Herald (1855-1858); elected as a Union Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1863 and as a Republican in 1864 and 1865; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1866); owner and editor, Butler County Citizen (1869-1888); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1876); assistant collector of internal revenue (1879, 1881); elected, delegate, Republican State Convention (1894, 1904); died, June 17, 1908 in Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania; interred, South Cemetery, Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
