STEHMAN, John M., a Representative from Lancaster County; born, March 21, 1830 in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pa.; banker; director, Lancaster County National Bank; elected, school director, Penn Township (9 years); tobacco leaf dealer; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1860; reelected to the House in 1865 and 1866; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1861); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1867); elected, school director, Hempfield School district (7 years); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1876, 1878); trustee, Millersville State Normal School (now Millersville University of Pennsylvania) (1879-1889); chair, Lancaster County Republican Committee (3 years); elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1880); director, Fulton National Bank; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1883-1889); died while in the office of Senate, July 17, 1889 in Rohrerstown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; interred, Rohrerstown Cemetery, Rohrerstown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
