CHALFANT, Thomas, a Representative from Columbia and Montour Counties; born, 1819 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; captain, Company D, 53th Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia (1863, Civil War); carpenter; patternmaker; engaged, construction of sugar and cotton mills; druggist; postmaster, United States Postal Service, Danville (1853-1861, 1885-1890, 1894-1899); editor, Danville Intelligencer (1861-1899); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1867, 1868 and 1871 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1869 or 1872 terms; trustee, State Hospital for Insane, Danville; elected, State Senate (1873-1875); president, Pennsylvania State Editorial Association; editor, the Danville Sun (1883-1899); died, November 18, 1899 in Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania; interred, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Danville, Montour County, Pennsylvania.
