ELLIS, James, a Representative from Schuylkill County; born, June 2, 1835 in Tyrone County, Ireland; attended, Central Academy; graduated, Dartmouth College; studied law, F.W. Hughes; 1st lieutenant and quartermaster, 6th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861, Civil War); quartermaster and major, 48th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861-1862, Civil War); lawyer (1858-1897); elected, District Attorney, Schuylkill County; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1870 and 1871 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1872 term; solicitor, Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company (1872-1897); elected, delegate-at-large, Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention (1872-1873); elected, Democratic National Conventions; died, September 17, 1897 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; interred, Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
