STEEL, James Irvin, a Representative from Schuylkill County; born, March 10, 1841 in Blairsville, Indiana County, Pa.; owner, Blairsville Record (1861-1869); owner, Huntingdon Monitor (1862-1866); elected, delegate, Pennsylvania Democratic Convention (1862); owner, editor and publisher, Ashland Advocate (1867-1906); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1870 and 1871 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1872 term; co-owner, Shamokin Daily Dispatch and Shamokin Weekly Times (1891-1896); publisher, Ashland Telegram (1899-1906); elected, treasurer, National Editorial Association (1904-1906); died, May 28, 1906 in Ashland, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Carmel Cemetery, Mount Carmel, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.
