ELLIOTT, William, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born in Ireland, March 2, 1816; graduated Goodfellow’s Private School, 1832; marble-cutter; tax collector, Philadelphia; prison inspector, Philadelphia (1852-1854); elected, delegate, National Republican Convention, Chicago (1860); member, Philadelphia Gas Trust; elected, common council, Philadelphia (1866); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1870 term; reelected to serve 3 more consecutive terms; elected, Speaker (1872-1873); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1873); elected, sheriff, Philadelphia County (1873-1876); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1878-1880); died in the office of the Senate, October 29, 1880 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
