BIRCH, John, a Representative from Washington County; born, August 5, 1810 in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pa.; proprietor, tannery; co-owner, Claysville Sentinel; elected, justice of the peace, Claysville (1845-1850, 1866-1875); elected, commissioner, Washington County (1848-1849); enumerator, United States Census (1860); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a Special Election; Sworn-In February 25, 1875 to serve the remaining 1875 term; reelected to serve the 1876 term; appointed, commissioner, Centennial Exposition of Philadelphia (1876); not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1877 term; died, October 20, 1904 in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania; interred, Claysville Cemetery, Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
