GATES, William, a Representative from Venango County; born, June 19, 1818 in Tionesta Township, Venango County (now Forest County), Pa.; teacher (4 terms); manager, various iron furnaces (5 years); proprietor, general store; farmer; justice of the peace (15 years); treasurer, school board, Rockland (25 years); postmaster, United States Postal Service, Rockland (1850-1855, 1861-1862); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1877 and 1878 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1879 term; died, August 18, 1901 in Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania; interred, Rockland Cemetery, Rockland, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
