BUTLER, Samuel, a Representative from Chester County; born, February 2, 1825 in Chester County, Pa.; attended, Unionville Academy; teacher; farmer; director of the poor, Chester County (1865-1871); directors, National Bank of Downingtown; president, Farmers’ National Bank of West Chester; elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican to serve the 1877, 1878 and 1879 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1880); elected, Pennsylvania State Treasurer (1880-1882); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania Governor (1882); died, February 1, 1891 in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania; interred, Oaklands Cemetery, West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania.
