SCANLAN, John W., a Representative from Northumberland County; born, May 9, 1854 in Upper Augusta, Northumberland County, Pa.; attended, Bloomsburg State Normal School (now Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania); attended, Selinsgrove College (now Susquehanna University); farmer; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1878 and 1880; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1882); merchant, coal, wood and sand; elected, chair, of Phelps County (Mo.) Democratic Committee (1902); president, Newburg State Bank, Mo.; died, December, 1911 in Newburg, Phelps County, Missouri.
