McGIFFIN, Norton, a Representative from Washington County; born, January 23, 1824 in Washington, Washington County, Pa.; graduated, Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College), 1841; private, “The Duquesne Greys”, Company K, First Pennsylvania Infantry (1846-1848, Mexican War); lieutenant colonel, 85th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861-1862, Civil War); law clerk; farmer; elected, treasurer, Washington County (1850-1851); elected, sheriff, Washington County (1858-1861); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1880; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1882); appointed, United States Consul, Port Rowan, Canada (1890-1892); appointed, United States Consul, Port Hope, Canada (1892-1894); died, July 30, 1905 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania; interred, Washington Cemetery, Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
