VANKIRK, Harvey J., a Representative from Beaver and Washington Counties; born, December 16, 1825 in Washington County, Pa.; attended, Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College), 1844; captain, Company A, 85th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861-1862, Civil War); lieutenant colonel, Company B, 58th Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Militia (1863); attorney-at-law (1851-1907); elected, county surveyor, Washington County (1850-1853); elected, register of deeds, Washington County (1858-1860); elected, solicitor, Washington Township (1868, 1881); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1868 and 1869; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1870); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1875, 1878); elected, burgess, Washington, Pa. (1877-1878); reelected to the House in 1882; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1884); died, June 5, 1907 in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania; interred, Washington Cemetery, Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.
