GATES, James Satterfield, a Representative from Venango County; born, March 10, 1843 in Elk Township, Carbon County, Pa.; private, Company G, 63rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861-1863, Civil War); lieutenant colonel, Company E, 17th Regiment, “Cooperstown Guards,” Pennsylvania National Guard (1871); farmer; proprietor, Gates & Hillier, mercantile business; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1883 term; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1885 term; clerk, hardware store; died, September 21, 1929 in Cooperstown, Venango County, Pennsylvania; interred, Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
