KAUFMAN, John Merkel, a Representative from Schuylkill County; born July 22, 1836 in Maiden Creek, Berks County, Pa.; proprietor, S.S. & J.M., general store (1857-1863); proprietor, Joseph Peter general store (1863-1864); proprietor, J.M. Kaufman & Brothers, iron manufacturers (1864-1877, 1879-1890); unsuccessful campaign, treasurer, Schuylkill County (1875); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1876, 1877 and 1884; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1878, 1886); farmer; died, April 13, 1901 in Jefferson, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; interred, Charles Evans Cemetery, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
