SHOWALTER, Joseph Baltzell, a Representative from Butler County; born, February 11, 1851 near Smithfield, Fayette County, Pa.; attended, George’s Creek Academy; attended, Long Island College Hospital, 1883; graduated, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, 1884; school teacher (1867-1873); engaged, oil business; physician (1884-1890); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1887 term; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1888); elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1888-1892); elected, United States Congress (Special Election, April 20, 1897-1903); engaged, land development, Florida; died, December 3, 1932 in Washington, District of Columbia; interred, North Side Cemetery, Butler, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
