ELKIN, John Pratt, a Representative from Indiana County; born, January 11, 1860 in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pa.; graduated, Indiana Normal School (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania),1880; graduated, University of Michigan Law School, 1884; employed, tin manufacturing; teacher; attorney-at-law (1885-1915); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1885 and 1887 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1889 term; elected, delegate, Republican State Convention (1890, 1891); deputy attorney general of Pennsylvania (1895-1897); elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1896); elected, Attorney General of Pennsylvania (1899-1903); chair, Republican State Committee (1896-1901); unsuccessful campaign, Governor of Pennsylvania (1902); elected, judge, Pennsylvania Supreme Court (1904-1915); died, October 3, 1915 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Oakland Cemetery, Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
