SHIRAS, George, III, a Representative from Allegheny County; born, January 1, 1859 in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh), Allegheny County, Pa.; graduated, Cornell University, 1881; LL.B., Yale Law School, 1883; attorney-at-law; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1888; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1890); unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1890); wildlife photographer; recipient, Gold Medal, World’s Fair, Paris (1900); elected as an Independent Republican, United States Congress (1903-1904); recipient, Grand Prize, World’s Fair, St. Louis (1904); writer and photographer, The National Geographic Magazine; died, March 24, 1942 in Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan; interred, Park Cemetery, Marquette, Marquette County, Michigan.
