GATCHELL, Dr. Jacob C., a Representative from Lancaster County; born, May 1, 1835 in East Nottingham, Chester County, Pa.; attended, Jordan Bank and Unionville Academies; M.D., Pennsylvania Medical College, 1860; assistant surgeon, 53rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865, Civil War); teacher (3 years);  physician; elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1868 and 1871; not a candidate for reelection the House (1869, 1872); postmaster, United States Postal Service, Safe Harbor, Pa. (1873-1877); reelected to the House in 1878 and 1888; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1880, 1890); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1892); died, November 16, 1907 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; interred, Boehms Chapel Cemetery, Willow Street, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
