SMITH, John W., a Representative from Bedford County; born, October 1, 1839 in Muskingum County, Oh.; corporal, Company C, 110th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1861-1864, Civil War; prisoner of war, 1862 and 1863); teacher, postmaster, United States Postal Service, Hopewell, Bedford County (20 years); farmer; engaged, lumber business; proprietor, merchandise business; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1891 term; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1892); died, July 21, 1905 in Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Yellow Creek, Hopewell Township, Bedford County, Pa.
