WHERRY, Samuel McCune, a Representative from Cumberland County; born, January 5, 1840 near Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pa.; graduated, Princeton College (now Princeton University), 1860; farmer; elected, delegate, Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention (1872-1873); owner and editor, Carlisle Volunteer (1877-1878); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1886; reelected to the House in 1888, 1890, and 1892; member, Pennsylvania Revenue Commission (1887-1890); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1894); president, board of trustees, State Normal School in Shippensburg (now Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania); died, October 14, 1901 in Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; interred, Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
