HAMMOND, James Brett, a Representative from Westmoreland County; born, April 18, 1867 in Bolivar, Westmoreland County, Pa.; graduated, Indiana Normal School (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), 1887; private, Battery L, 212th Regiment, 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (1864-1865, Civil War); teacher and principal, Bolivar schools; bookkeeper, manager, treasurer and proprietor, Reese-Hammond Fire Brick Company; elected, burgess, Bolivar (1 term); elected, school board, Bolivar; elected, treasurer, Bolivar (1 term); elected, delegate, Pennsylvania State Republican Convention (1891); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania House of Representatives (1892); elected, council, Bolivar (1895-1917); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1895 and 1897 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1899 term; owner and operator, Kentucky Fire Brick Company (1906-1917); unsuccessful Progressive Party candidate, United States Congress (1914); died, November 9, 1918 in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia; interred, Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Ashtabula, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
