SMITH, Jefferson W., a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, March 15, 1859 in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pa.; printing apprentice, Harrisburg Patriot (4 years); member, Typographical Union No. 2; appointed, superintendent, Station S, United States Post Office, Philadelphia (1893-1910); clerk, mercantile appraisers’ office, Philadelphia; elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican in 1914; resigned from the House, June 2, 1915; reelected to the House in 1916, 1920 and 1922; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1918, 1924); agent, children’s bureau,  office of the commissioners, Philadelphia County; Republican candidate for reelection to the House (1936); died, August 8, 1936 in Atlantic City, Atlantic County, New Jersey.
