MURPHY, John R., a Representatives from Allegheny County; born, city of Allegheny (now Pittsburgh), Allegheny County, Pa., August 22, 1850; employed, tobacco factory; sold newspapers; produce delivery; constable, produce markets of Allegheny (1876-1884); appointed, chief of police, city of Allegheny (1884, 1890); elected, director of Public Safety, city of Allegheny (1891-1901); appointed, recorder (mayor), city of Allegheny by Governor William A. Stone (1901-1907); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1904 and 1906; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1908); died, February 19, 1917 in Mount Clemens, Macomb County, Michigan; interred, Union Dale Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
